Sleeping at work?
On-the-job sleepiness can affect the bottom-line; therefore companies are coming up with novel ways to boost employees' energy levels. Now many companies are providing nap rooms. Although it is a stigma for some companies, it's a growing trend. Outfitted with large sofas, blankets and comfortable chairs, the rooms are phone-and Blackberry-free zones. Some companies forgo beds and blankets and focus instead on creating an environment that emphasizes wellness and relaxation, reasoning that such a setting will keep employees refreshed and alert---some providing dark, isolated rooms where people can stretch out horizontally.

Reasons for a quick nap
Napping doesn't have to happen just because you are not getting enough sleep. There is often a dip in your body, physically, in the afternoon when your concentration is low, and a nap can increase alertness. While some people favor napping on the job, others are skeptical.

Solutions

The first part: getting a good night’s sleep
One thing all the experts agree on: A good night's sleep is essential. Here are a few tips for a good night’s sleep:

  • Institute a sleep routine: Go to bed at a specific time every night, take a warm shower, read a book or meditate to relax.
  • Consume caffeine and alcohol in moderation. Avoid caffeine after lunch. Alcohol: less is better, earlier is better and with food is better.
  • Don't go to bed full or famished. A light snack a few minutes before bed consisting of natural or complex carbs such as a piece of fruit or some nut bread is ideal.
  • Make sure your room is cool and dark.
  • Find a comfortable mattress and pillow.

The second part: avoiding a nap at work
Here is how to say goodbye to those sleepy days at the office:

Munch on something - The easiest way to fall asleep is to be idle for too long. This includes sitting at a computer and reading. If you find yourself falling asleep during one of these activities or one like it, grab something to munch on. One snack that works great for this is sunflower seeds. Cracking the shells with your teeth will keep your mind as well as your body awake. If you're in the mood for fruit, cherries have the same effect. Things like nuts and chips can work too.

An apple a day will...keep you awake. - Many people have found apples to be more effective in keeping them awake than coffee. This is because apples contain pectin, which is supposedly a stronger stimulant than caffeine.

Get a little exercise - It's not likely that there is a gym in your office building, but luckily you don't need one to get your adrenaline going. If you find yourself dozing off, get up and go outside. Go for a brisk walk or a light jog, and get some fresh air. This will get your blood pumping and keep you awake and alert for another hour or two.

Eat breakfast - Eating breakfast in the morning will give your body energy and tell it that it is time to wake up. Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast every morning are healthier and more productive at work.

Drink water - Energy has a lot to do with health, and the best thing you can do for your health is drink a lot of water. The average person needs eight to ten glasses of water a day and most people don't come close to that requirement. A glass of cold water will refresh you and wake you up also.
